With its spectacular mountainous backdrop, ostrich show farms and traditional Klein Karoo hospitality, Oudtshoorn is a town well worth visiting. Easily accessible via the scenic Route 62, Oudtshoorn is the hub of the Klein Karoo Region with a host of attractions on offer from natural wonders to outdoor thrills.
During the 'feather boom' of the early twentieth century, Oudtshoorn became the ostrich capital of the world with feather exports becoming the third biggest South African export. A number of gracious sandstone mansions or 'feather palaces' are still standing in the town and are a reminder of the bygone era. Besides visiting an Ostrich Show Farms and attempting to ride an ostrich and partake in an ostrich race - visitors to Oudtshoorn can explore the world renowned Cango Caves, enjoy hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding mountains and take a scenic drive over the spectacular Swartberg Mountains Pass.
Wine tasting and excellent cuisine can also be enjoyed at a variety of excellent restaurants and in April each year the town explodes with visitors, music, theatre and live entertainment during the annual Klein Karoo National Arts Festival.
