One of the gems of the Overberg region, the coastal town of Hermanus is also famed as having some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. Just an hour outside of Cape Town, Hermanus is a popular weekend retreat and has miles of sandy beach, nature reserves, golf courses and whale watching to enjoy.
The Hermanus Cliff Path which follows the cliff tops along the coastline from one side of town to the other is the perfect spot from which to watch whales frolicking in the bay. The giant Southern Right Whale visits the waters off the coastline between July and November each year to mate and calve and can be seen breaching and blowing extremely close to shore.
Various outdoor activities including hiking, walking and golf are on offer, and for the less energetic the village has plenty of shops, galleries and restaurants to indulge in. Hermanus is well positioned for exploring the other attractions of the Overberg region including the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in Betty's Bay and Great White Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai.
