Originally a slave market, Greenmarket Square earned its name by serving as a fruit and vegetable market for many years before becoming a parking lot in the 1950's and then; from the 1980's to present day, an informal trading centre. Cobbled streets and tightly packed stalls brimming with handmade goods and colourful characters all vie for your attention as you step into the square. One of Cape Town's oldest and most popular markets, Greemmarket Square is surrounded by restaurants and coffee shops providing the ideal place to sit and rest after a busy shopping session.
