Hans Merensky Nature Reserve
Situated 70km east of Tzaneen in the Limpopo is the 5185 hectare Hans Merensky Nature Reserve. With the Letaba River forming its western boundary, one of the major attractions of the reserve is the fact that most of it can be navigated on foot. Hiking trails range from 1km to 32km trails where hikers can rest over-night in the huts provided. The nature reserve is home to various animals including zebra, giraffe and kudu with the river attracting a great diversity of birds. The reserve has become a very popular birding spot, attracting avid bird watchers from far and wide in their quest to view the many beautiful species. Morning and evening guided game drives are also on offer and visitors can book a day in advance.
While in the reserve visitors can also explore the Tsonga Open-Air Museum where the traditional building style, culture and craft work of the North Tsonga people, a refugee group from southern Mozambique, is displayed. Guided tours of the museum are presented during the week at 10h00 and 15h00.
