Found just 23km north of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park in KwaZulu Natal, Thanda Private Reserve was opened in 2004 as a celebration of the Zulu people and their culture and heritage. Thanda, which means 'love', follows the ethos "for love of nature, wildlife and dear ones'. Aimed at teaching visitors more about the Zulu's rich history, culture and traditions, Thanda Game Reserve has worked towards restoring nature's balance by reintroducing game species that are endemic to the area, including the Big 5. With nine villas and 4 luxurious tents to choose from, Thanda Private Reserve strives to exceed the expected luxury of most 5 star game lodges making it one of the most awarded reserves in Africa. Thanda offers guests the Big Seven safari experience, encasing the illustrious Big Five within its 7800 hectare borders. Its close proximity to the Indian Ocean ensures a balmy climate throughout the year. The only private game reserve to hold exclusive membership with The Leading Hotels of the World. In 2008, Thanda was awarded 'Africa's Leading Luxury Lodge' and 'South Africa's Leading Safari Lodge' at The World Travel Awards in Durban.

Wildlife
Since the lodges inception, Thandas aim has been to restore natural balance to the area by bringing species which were endemic to the area back. Originally purchased as degraded cattle farms, rife with alien plant species, Thandas wildlife management has concentrated on an extensive rehabilitation project which included reintroducing the Big Five. Thanda was also the first private game reserve in Kwa Zulu-Natal to have successfully reintroduced a breeding pack of wild dog into its borders.

Our game rangers, trackers and field guides have extensive knowledge of both the fauna and flora in Thandas ecosystems. During bush walks guests have the opportunity to learn about all the fascinating uses of plant sin the area and to identify animal spoor. You may also track specific animals with a rangers assistance on request.
