Mkhuze Game Reserve

Time needed: 5 Hour(s) to 1 Week(s)

A well kept secret, Mkhuze offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the country and is a potential highlight that should not be missed. Situated in northern Zululand, the Mkhuze Game Reserve constitutes the north western spur of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The Mkhuze River curves along the reserve's northern and eastern borders with a fine stretch of forest along its banks.

While lacking lion, Mkhuze is home to the other members of the Big Five and boasts an impressive array of wildlife. The astonishing diversity of natural habitats means a wide variety of animal species including black and white rhino, elephant, giraffe, nyala, blue wildebeest, warthog, eland, hippo, impala, kudu and other smaller antelope.

Visitors will find hides at different water holes thus providing for some of the most impressive wildlife viewing one is likely to see. Visitors park their cars and enter the hides on foot. During the drier winter months, large concentrations of game may be seen at the waterholes and excellent views of most of the larger mammals are common. These hides offer unique opportunities for photographs and many famous wildlife pictures have been taken here.

A Zulu cultural village in the reserve offers a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle and crafts of the local community.
