Type: Scenic Drives, Arts and Crafts, Waterfalls
Time needed: 3 Hour(s) to 1 Week(s)
Set in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the aptly named Midlands Meander traverses the area between Mooi River and Pietermaritzburg and introduces the visitor to a host of wonderful handcrafted goods. Quaint towns such as Mooi River, Curry's Post, Nottingham Road, Howickand Karkloof - to name but a few - are all havens to artists and creative souls. The area is filled with quaint coffee shops, pottery displays, herb gardens, cheeseries, breweries, dams, forests, waterfalls and much more - essentially anything handmade, crafted and beautiful can be found by simply taking a slow and meandering drive. The Midlands Meander logo is of a rare and very beautiful butterfly that is found only in the Karkloof area in South Africa. An extremely informative book and map of the route is available from the airport and all major tourism offices. The book details the different areas and provides an easy to follow key of the various attractions on offer. Take your time to soak in all that the Midlands has to offer; the route can take anything from a day to a week to explore.
