Sani Pass

Type: 4X4 Drive, Scenic Valley, Wildlife
Sani Pass is the rugged 4X4 trail that acts as the border gateway between KwaZulu-Natal, the Southern Drakensberg and Lesotho. The road begins in the small farming town of Underberg and slowly meanders its way up the mountain, changing from a well-maintained tarred road to a steep, zigzagging, narrow road that can become treacherous at times, as can be seen by the occasional scattered remains of vehicles that did not make it. Sani Pass climbs to an altitude of 2874m, of which the final 1000m are climbed in just 8km. Stopping along the way visitors are treated to magnificent views, waterfalls, a wide variety of fynbos and other vegetation as well as baboons and different birds. As the road is dangerous and difficult to navigate there are organised tours available, allowing guests to sit back, relax and take in the scenery while a trained guide tackles the road and teaches you more about the history of the area. Once in Lesotho tour guides take visitors into a local Basotho village to meet the local people and learn more about their way of life, before stopping at the 'Highest Pub in Africa' for a hearty meal. As Sani Pass takes visitors out of Sani Pass and through the border control, visitors to the pass will need to carry their passports with them.
