Mooi River

Time needed: 2 Hour(s) to 5 Hour(s)

Considered to be the gateway to the Natal Midlands Meander, Mooi River is the epitome of country-style living. Found in the magnificent KwaZulu Natal Midlands, Mooi River is predominantly orientated around agriculture and livestock. Visitors can take guided tours of racehorse stud farms and farm training colleges to learn more about the world of farming. The area is also home to craft stores and displays of handmade goods from woven rugs and ceramics to wooden furniture, leather work and jewellery.

The town is situated on the banks of the river and was given its name by the Voortrekker settlers who thought the river and surrounding area was so beautiful that they named it "Mooi" which means "pretty" in Afrikaans. Today the upper regions of the river offer ideal fly-fishing opportunities while the lower stretches are a popular place to spend a day relaxing on a river cruise or enjoying a picnic.
