Kosi Bay
Not to be missed, Kosi Bay Nature Reserve incorporates some of the most isolated and beautiful beaches in Southern Africa. This is just one of its alluring features though as it offers an estuary, mangrove swamps and a string of four interconnected lakes that flow down the hillside. The mangrove and palm fringed beaches provide the exquisite coastal beauty, while a coral reef just offshore offers superb snorkelling with an array of tropical fish and coral close to the shore.
The fresh-water lake system is home to many fish species making angling a popular pursuit both on the lakes and in the sea, while hippopotamus, Zambezi sharks and crocs are also present within the collection of lakes. The variety of birds is prolific and Kosi Bay offers a paradise of viewing for the avid bird-watcher.
The Kosi Bay Trail is a 4-day circular guided hike around the area with each night spent in one of the remote bush huts in different parts of the reserve. This offers a wonderful way of experiencing the variety of systems present within the reserve while enjoying at close quarters the thrill of the bush, lakes and coast. The reserve also has campsites and some chalets offering accommodation. Access to Kosi Bay Camp, Kosi Bay Mouth and other attractions within the reserve is severely limited by poor access roads and sand dunes; a 4 wheel-drive vehicle is almost a necessity and an invigorating part of the adventure.
