Howick
The small town of Howick is just 24km from Pietermaritzburg and is home to the spectacular Howick Falls which cascade some 100 metres. Standing on the viewing platform overlooking the gorge is breathtaking and one can truly appreciate the enormity of nature and the power of water. An attractive and quaint town, Howick began originally as a hostel and blacksmith service for the pioneers during the Great Trek. It has since developed into a tourism orientated village attracting visitors to the falls and the many surrounding hiking trails.
Howick is now part of The Midlands Meander, a craft orientated route that stretches for over 80 kilometres from Mooi River to Pietermaritzburg and includes potters workshops, coffee shops and delis, cheese makers, herb gardens and candle makers, as well as plenty of beautiful scenery.
