Built between 1910 and 1913 the Union Building in Pretoria was designed by Sir Herbert Baker in the English Monumental Style and makes use of a light sandstone.
The building has a wing on either side of it which was intended to represent the bilingual nature of the country and the unity of its many cultures. A beautiful and majestic building, the Union Building stands proudly at the top of Meintjieskop and acts as the home to South Africa's president and its government. The building is surrounded by lush gardens, filled with monuments and statues, and is considered to be an architectural masterpiece. It took 3-years to build requiring 1, 265 workers and cost 1, 180, 000 pounds.
