Gauteng is dominated by the busy metropolises of Johannesburg and Pretoria, with Johannesburg being considered the financial hub of South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Meaning "The Place of Gold" Gauteng is the smallest and yet most populated of South Africa's provinces.
Many overseas visitors either enter or depart South Africa from Johannesburg and its central location makes it the ideal starting point before heading up to one of the many nearby game reserves such as the Kruger National Park. Gauteng is also home to SoWeTo known to be the heart of the struggle against the Apartheid regime.
Gauteng's winters are crisp, cool and dry while its summers are hot with sudden thunder showers.
