Port Elizabeth

Time needed: 2 Day(s) to 1 Week(s)

Port Elizabeth, or P.E. as it is called by the locals, is found on the south eastern coast. It is South Africa's second largest city (in terms of area) and is home to its fifth largest population, with over 1.5 million people calling the city home.

Only 260km from Knysna on the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth offers warm and sunny, weather that is ideal for days spent lazing on the beach or swimming and surfing in the warm gentle waters. Algoa Bay is in fact South Africa's water sport capital with ideal conditions for sailing, jet skiing and diving. The ocean is also home to seals, whales, dolphins and even ragged-tooth sharks all making for interesting and exciting boat trips and even whale watching. The beach front is a hive of activity with locals and holidaymakers relaxing on the walkways or wandering across the main road to the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World.

Port Elizabeth has many places of historical interest to be visited and explored; the Donkin Heritage trail is a 5km trail that follows the footsteps of the 1820 settlers past 47 monuments and historical points. And, within the city centre is the beautiful Settler's Park and St George's Park with its cricket club and magnificent landscaped gardens.

One of Port Elizabeth's biggest drawcards is the combination of a seaside holiday with the opportunity to view the Big 5 in malaria free surrounds. Only 73km outside of the city is the 5-star private Shamwari Game Reserve as well as the renowned Addo Elephant National Park and a host of other smaller reserves.
