Queen's Park Botanical Gardens and Zoo
Type: Botanical Garden, Zoo
The Queen's Park Botanical Gardens and Zoo was originally opened as a botanical garden in 1896 by Queen Victoria. The zoo was added in the 1930's followed by the lion enclosure in 1959. The park is situated in close proximity to East London's city centre, on 10 hectares of natural coastal forest which adds to its beauty and appeal. Cycads are plentiful and the gardens are filled with lush indigenous vegetation. One of the main features of the zoo is its water fountain which currently houses a collection of Koi fish.
The zoo is home to 47 different mammal species, 38 bird species and 7 different reptile species. While the lion enclosure, that was added in 1959, is now home to a family of Chimpanzees who offer great entertainment with their family games and endearing personalities.
The gardens are well worth lingering over and offer a tranquil escape from the busy city.
