The Mahango Game Park
The Mahango Game Park is bordered by the perennial Okavango River and is characterized by ravine forests, towering baobabs and broad flood plains. Home to large herds of elephants as well as lion, buffalo, roan and sable antelope and red lechwe the park extends for over 244kmē and is one of Namibia’s most diverse conservation areas. There is no accommodation in the park itself but there are a number of lodges nearby providing ample choice in terms of accommodation. The Popa falls, where the Okavango River runs through a series of rapids, are located about 15km north of the park, on the border of Botswana. Driving through the park will take visitors approximately half a day. A full circular route around the entire park is also available but a 4 X 4 is required to navigate the bad roads. The best time to visit Mahango Park is in March to October when the weather is dry and the animals can be easily spotted.
The area is known to have cases of malaria and bilharzia and visitors should therefore take the necessary precautions.
