Windhoek
With a broad mix of architectural and cultural influences, Windhoek is Namibia's largest city and acts as both its commercial and judicial hub. The international airport is located here, which means that most visits to Namibia are likely to begin and end in Windhoek. Positioned in a beautiful valley between the Eros and Auas Mountains, and on the northern slopes of the Khomas Highlands, Windhoek is 1728 metres above sea level and has a semi-desert climate with hot days and cold nights. The town of Windhoek was originally established due to the discovery of a hot spring over 160 years ago. The hot spring still exists today and can be found in a suburb called Klein-Windhoek.
Windhoek is a clean, modern city with a strong German-Colonial meets Africa feel to it. There are still numerous German-speaking residents and although the official language is English, with Afrikaans being a close second, German is still widely spoken and used.
