Walvis Bay

Time needed: 0.5 Day(s) to 4 Day(s)

Walvis Bay (meaning 'Whale Bay') was given its name due to the large number of whales found in the surrounding waters - due to a high concentration of plankton. Located half way down Namibia's coastline, just 30km south of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay is Namibia's largest port and one of its most sought after holiday destinations. There is a natural lagoon in Walvis Bay that attracts over 120 000 birds including flamingos and pelicans. These birds are also joined yearly by over 200 000 migratory birds making the lagoon a spectacular sight, and birding highly rewarding. The lagoon is also highly popular for water sport enthusiasts. Just outside the town one will find 'Dune 7' the highest sand dune in the area which offers magnificent views. 'Dune 7' is also popular for sand-boarding.

A natural deep-water harbour, Walvis Bay is a refuge for sea vessels looking for shelter while navigating the African continent. The busy town is home to over 50 000 residents, most of whom are employed by the harbor or the fishing industry.
