Sesriem is the gateway to the sand dune 'ocean' known as Sossusvlei. Sesriem Canyon is a large gorge that plunges down 30 - 40m and has a series of small pools at its base. The name Sesriem originated from the early pioneers who had to tie six leather straps together in order to lower their buckets to the bottom of the canyon to draw water. These straps or thongs were called leer riems and the word 'ses' is the Afrikaans word for six, therefore the area was known as Ses Riem which later became Sesriem in English.
