Considered to be one of Namibia's most famous buildings, Duwisib Castle is a grand neo-baroque fortress that was built in 1909 and stands proudly on high ground looking down into the remote valley of the Namib Dune Desert. The castle was built by Baron Captain Heinrich Van Wolf to reflect his commitment to the German military cause. Most of the materials for the castle were imported from Germany. The interior of the castle was very cleverly designed with thick walls keeping the castle cool in summer and with two huge fireplaces keeping it warm in winter.
Sadly the Baron rejoined the army at the start of the First World War and was killed in battle in 1916. His wife never returned to the castle, choosing to settle in Europe instead. The castle was bought by a Swedish family and was then transferred to the Namibian state.
Today visitors to the castle will be able to explore the 22 rooms as well as view the collection of 18th and 19th century antiques, armour and paintings that are now displayed there. Duwisib Castle can be reached by taking the D286 road from Sesriem to Helmeringhausen.
