Okavango Highlights

Duration: 5 Days
Departs: Maun
Returns: Maun

Enjoy this tour of the Okavango Delta where you will experience some of the most spectacular game viewing the Delta has to offer. The first camp that you visit is located on the edge of the Shinde Lagoon in the North Eastern Okavango Delta. The camp is surrounded by deep clear waterways, which flow over yellow sands and past palm fringed islands teeming with bird life and game. Accommodation is in deluxe tents with ensuite bathrooms and unique views across the floodplains. Included are game drives, night drives, motorboat trips along the Delta waterways and Mokoro excursions.

You then fly across the Delta to the South Western Okavango Delta. Your camp is located in the more remote reaches of the Okavango and is built amongst spectacular shade trees of ebony, knobthorn accacia and the sausage species. This idyllic setting makes for exciting game walks and also offers some of the best areas in the Delta for exploring by Mokoro and by motorboat.

Daily Planner
Days One and Two

On arrival in Maun you will be met by a representative and escorted onto a light aircraft, for a 30 minute scenic flight across the south western Okavango to Shinde airstrip. Please note that you are booked on a seat rate and that luggage is strictly limited to 12kg per person in light manageable bags.

Located at the edge of the Shinde lagoon Shinde camp is surrounded by deep clear waterways, which flow over yellow sands and past palm fringed islands teeming with bird life and game. The dining/lounge area is a multi-tiered tree house under canvas built amongst jackalberries, water figs and mangosteens and overlooks the luminescent waters of the delta. There is also a swimming pool and a sundowner deck in which to relax and cool off in the heat of the day.

Game activities are varied as we are in a private concession and Shinde offers the broadest game experience on offer in the Delta. Included are game drives, night drives, and motorboat trips along the delta waterways. Mokoro excursions are also available all year around in the shallower waters and you can stop to explore the tree islands on foot in search of game. Fly and spin fishing is also popular and Shinde waters are home to the voracious and much sought after tigerfish. All rods and tackle are provided in camp. During your stay at Shinde, you will liaise with your guide and the camp managers as to your preference of activities; they will make recommendations based on wildlife movements, time of day and season.

Accommodation is in deluxe tents with ensuite bathrooms, each tent with a unique view across the floodplain or onto the lagoon.

Days Three and Four

After breakfast and (time permitting) a morning activity you will be transferred to the nearby airstrip and board a light aircraft for the short flight across the delta to Kanana Airstrip (flight time will be advised the day prior to travel and activities/meals planned accordingly).

Kanana encompasses a necklace of islands on the Xudum River in the more remote reaches of the Okavango delta. It is an exciting and beautiful area particularly on the islands which you will explore during your stay. The traditional luxury camp is built amongst spectacular shade trees of ebony, knobthorn acacia and the sausage species. The dining and sitting areas are raised on decking and encircle a massive ancient fig tree, which is the focal point of the camp's public area.

Within the concession, the hillocks of grass-covered islands formed by fertile eroded termite hills are dotted with fig, palm and other trees, providing shade and a lookout for predators to spot their prey on the floodplain. This idyllic setting makes for exciting game walks and also offers some of the best areas in the Delta for exploring by mokoro (canoe) and by motorboat when the water levels are high. Boating is an ideal way to sample the varied bird life with particular reference to the breeding heronry situated within the concession, one of the most active breeding heronries in southern hemisphere (breeding occurs in spring/summer months). In addition you can also explore the area on game drives and night drives year round.
