Savuti

Type: Game viewing area
There are 5 main features of Savuti; the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge which encircles the western edge and was once the shoreline of the superlake that covered most of northern Botswana. Other features of the area are; the Mababe Depression, a flat, featureless plain that was once the bed of the superlake, and the Savuti Marsh with its dead trees. Lastly one will find the Rocky Outcrops and the Savuti Channel. The Savuti Channel is located in the south west of the Chobe National Park and covers almost 5000kmē of land. The erratic Savute Channel, when flowing, runs a distance of 100 kilometres and finally ends in the marsh. The Savuti Marsh covers an area of 10 878kmē and is the remnant of the superlake. The Gubatsa Hills are found in the flat Savuti area. Consisting of seven hills that rise up to a height of 90m above the flat landscape, the Gubatsa Hills are further evidence of the Magadikgadi superlake that once dominated the area. The name Gubatsa means 'the place where water can be dug in river sand'. The north-eastern faces of the hills have been worn into almost vertical cliffs by the continuous flow of waves many many years ago.
